Ever heard of an invention that’s taking off and thought ‘what a brilliantly simple idea… why didn’t I think of that?”

I think we all probably have. Well here are six more you can add to the list of great ideas you wish you’d had.

These are the six winning concepts from some of our hottest young entrepreneurs who entered 2016 IDEA Starter youth entrepreneurship contest – a competition for 15-24 year olds which backs young people to turn their business ideas into action.

The winning ideas all centered around technology – including an app which helps young people share their feelings through colours, a water meter in your pocket and an idea to attract more girls at school into science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

SafeDriver – a mobile application that provides audio alerts to drivers about what they need to look out for while driving, as well a audio messages about upcoming hazards and high risk areas. Inventor: Isaac Mercer.

Sentinel –a self sustaining system that allows rainwater tank owners to view the water level of their tank from their smartphone. Inventor: Zach Preston.

GirlBoss NZ – is a ‘for youth by youth’ organisation with a mission to inspire, empower and equip kiwi girls to develop their science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM), leadership and entrepreneurial skills, to become the change makers of the future. Inventors: Alexia Hilbertidou, Kayla Turner and Sayurie Naicker.

Fulcrum – an online platform aiming to solve the disconnect between textbooks, classroom learning, homework and tutorials, utilising an optimised memory curve. Inventor: Vivek Kumar.

GreenLightGo – an app that allows people to share their feelings/state with their support network through a customisable traffic light spectrum, such as green for good, orange for watch out, red you need to call me/pick up I’m having a panic attack or not feeling good. Inventor: Caitlin Smart.

NoBS Ratings – an all-encompassing social and ethical impact system for businesses. NoBS Ratings will assess and rate a business on their impact in five main areas: 1. Environment 2. Labour 3. Fair Trade 4. Local Community Engagement 5. Pro-consumer behaviour. Inventors: Mildred Wong and Sam Yoon.
